Ketu in the 4th House
The fourth house is the sign at the bottom of the chart, four signs on from the lagna, counted whole under Lipta's whole-sign houses. It governs home, mother and peace of mind: the household, land and property, vehicles, early education, emotional security and the private self that the world does not see. It is a kendra, one of the four angular houses. Ketu is the Moon's south node, a point and not a body, with traditional themes of detachment, intuition, separation and release. When Ketu is in the fourth, Rahu is always in the tenth, so the reading is of the axis between private life and public role.

What it traditionally signifies
Ketu in the fourth house is traditionally read as a loosened bond with the idea of a fixed home. Commentators describe someone who may move often, live away from the place of birth, or feel that no single house fully contains them, and who finds inner peace through something other than comfort: study, contemplation, devotion or solitude. Some texts link the placement with a mother who is spiritual, unconventional or emotionally reserved, or with a relationship to the mother that is close in an unusual way. The constructive face is an inner steadiness that does not depend on surroundings, and a home life kept simple and uncluttered.
The less comfortable face is restlessness at home, difficulty settling, or a sense of emotional security that has to be built rather than inherited. Rahu in the tenth then turns appetite towards the public world: career, authority, status, recognition and the institutions one works within. Many readers consider Rahu in the tenth, an upachaya and kendra, a strong placement for worldly ambition. The common modern reading treats the axis as a balance between inner and outer life, with the familiar ground being inner detachment and the growth lying in public work.
The sign on the fourth and the condition of its lord, together with the Moon as the natural significator of the mother and the mind, decide much of the reading. Where the nodes are given aspects, which some authorities allow and others do not, a fourth-house Ketu would cast them on the eighth, tenth and twelfth houses.
What it does not mean
Ketu in the fourth house does not mean an unhappy childhood, the loss of property, or anything about the mother's health or life, and it does not predict a move. It is not a statement about peace of mind as a fixed condition. The Moon, the fourth lord and the full chart carry those questions. Rahu in the tenth is not a promise of fame or a forecast of a particular career.
Questions it raises
- 01Which sign is on the fourth house, and where is the fourth lord?
- 02What is the condition of the Moon, natural significator of mother and mind?
- 03Is any planet sitting with Ketu in the fourth or with Rahu in the tenth?
- 04How strong is the tenth lord, given Rahu's position there?
- 05Is a Ketu or Rahu dasha running, or is the transiting node axis crossing the natal fourth and tenth?
In practice
In practice a fourth-house Ketu is read with the fourth lord and the Moon, then the tenth-house Rahu is weighed against the tenth lord and the Sun. The dasha shows which years draw on the axis, and the nodes' transit, which takes about eighteen months per sign, shows when it is reawakened. Lipta readings cite those placements and dates, so a sentence about home or work can be checked against the chart.
