Ketu in Cancer

Cancer is the Moon's own sign, a movable water sign concerned with feeling, nourishment, home and the mother. Placing Ketu here puts the south lunar node in the Moon's house, and it puts Rahu, the north node, in Capricorn, the sign directly opposite. The two nodes are mathematical points rather than bodies, and they always face each other across the chart, so the reader is always looking at an axis and never at one node alone. Ketu's traditional themes are detachment, intuition, endings and the inward turn; it is called the moksha karaka, the significator of release.

What it traditionally signifies

Classical texts describe the nodes as hostile to the two lights, the Sun and the Moon, since eclipses happen when one of the lights is near a node. That is why some readers treat Cancer as uneasy ground for Ketu, although none of the common dignity schemes gives it a formal debilitation here. What the tradition does describe is an emotional life that runs deep but does not always show: strong intuition, sensitivity to atmosphere, and at times a sense of being slightly apart from the family one grew up in. Nurture may be given more easily than it is asked for.

The gentle side of a Cancer Ketu is a mind that can let go of old hurts more readily than most, and an instinct for care that does not need thanks. The difficult side is a detachment from one's own needs, or a feeling of never being quite at home in any one place. Rahu in Capricorn then pulls the other way, towards public standing, structure, work and the respect of institutions; the axis is often read as a tension between private feeling and public duty, with growth expected on the Rahu side and familiarity on the Ketu side.

The Moon's own condition, as sign lord, tells the reader much of what this Ketu will deliver, and a strong, well-supported Moon is read as steadying it considerably. The nakshatra matters as well. The final pada of Punarvasu, ruled by Jupiter, is protective and hopeful. Pushya, ruled by Saturn and often called the most nourishing of the nakshatras, gives the node a disciplined, devotional quality. Ashlesha, ruled by Mercury, is the coiled serpent: penetrating, private and perceptive. The end of Ashlesha is a gandanta junction, a degree some readers handle with extra care.

What it does not mean

Ketu in Cancer is not a statement about the mother's health, a broken home or emotional coldness, and it does not foretell anything about property or family. The texts describe a disposition, not an event. The Moon, the fourth house and the fourth lord are what a reader consults on the mother and the home, and a single node in Cancer does not outweigh them.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Where is the Moon, the sign lord, and is it waxing or waning, strong or afflicted?
  2. 02Is Ketu in Punarvasu, Pushya or Ashlesha, and near the gandanta degree at the end of Cancer?
  3. 03Which houses do Cancer and Capricorn fall in for this lagna?
  4. 04Is the Moon itself near either node, which some readers treat as an eclipse-like configuration?
  5. 05Is a Ketu, Rahu or Moon period running?

In practice

A careful reading of Ketu in Cancer starts from the Moon, moves to the houses that the Cancer and Capricorn axis occupies, and then checks conjunctions with either node. Only after that does the dasha come in, along with the nodes' current transit, since the transiting nodes moving over natal Cancer or Capricorn are read as reawakening the axis for about a year and a half. Lipta readings cite each of these placements and dates.
