Venus in Cancer
Venus in Vedic astrology is the planet of enjoyment and attachment: the arts, comfort, courtship, the senses and the bond of partnership. It is the karaka of the seventh house and, in a man's chart, traditionally the significator of the wife. Cancer is the Moon's sign, and in the table of natural friendships Venus counts the Moon as an enemy, even though the Moon, for its part, regards Venus as neutral. The result is a placement the tradition treats with some care: two planets that both want pleasure, but one through the senses and the other through feeling, sharing a single sign.

What it traditionally signifies
Cancer is a movable water sign, and Venus here is traditionally read as affection that nourishes. The classical descriptions mention a love of home, cooking and the familiar, attachment to the mother and to the family one grew up in, and a taste that favours the soft, the old and the comforting over the striking. Pleasure is tied to safety: this Venus enjoys most where it feels protected, and gives most to those it has gathered in.
The mismatch between Venus and the Moon shows as the other face. Mood governs appetite, so what pleases one day may not the next; affection can become a need for reassurance; giving can slide into dependence, or into the quiet expectation that care will be returned in kind. Because Cancer is a movable sign, the feelings move too, and this Venus can be hurt easily and recover quickly in the same week. The Moon's condition in the chart decides a good deal of this, since it disposes Venus here.
The nakshatras differ: Punarvasu, ruled by Jupiter, is the kindest version, generous and quick to forgive; Pushya, Saturn's nakshatra, is restrained and dutiful, affection shown as service; Ashlesha, ruled by Mercury, is the most clinging and the most perceptive, with an intensity Cancer does not otherwise show. In the fourth house this Venus describes the home and a wish for a beautiful one; in the seventh, a partnership sought for emotional shelter; in the second, a family of good food and gentle speech; in the eighth or twelfth, a private and sometimes hidden emotional life.
What it does not mean
Venus in Cancer is not a sign of weakness, whatever the friendship tables suggest; an inimical sign changes the expression of a planet, not its right to give good results. It does not foretell a dependent marriage, a mother who dominates, or a partner who resembles her. It is not a reading of beauty or desirability, and it does not speak to money except through the general theme of comfort. Above all, it cannot be read without the Moon: a strong, well placed Moon makes this a warm and workable Venus, while an afflicted Moon is where most of the difficulties associated with the placement actually come from.
Questions it raises
- 01How is the Moon placed, by sign, house and aspects, since it disposes this Venus?
- 02Which house does Venus occupy, and does Saturn or Mars aspect it there?
- 03Is Venus in Punarvasu, Pushya or Ashlesha, and in which pada?
- 04Does the navamsa place Venus in a sign where it is more at ease?
- 05Is Venus combust, and which dasha is running, Venus's, the Moon's or another?
In practice
In practice, Venus in Cancer is read as a pair with the Moon. A careful reader looks first at the Moon's sign and house, then at whether Venus has help from Jupiter or pressure from Saturn and Rahu, and only then describes how affection is likely to be given and received. The navamsa is checked because a watery Venus in the rashi chart often sits in earth or air there, which steadies the picture. The dasha says when any of this is in the foreground. Envisstack readings cite the placements and dates behind each statement, so the chain of reasoning can be followed.
