Venus in Taurus

Venus in Taurus is Venus at home. In Vedic astrology Venus governs the pleasures of the senses, the arts, the capacity to enjoy and to be enjoyed, and the whole territory of partnership; it is the karaka of the seventh house and, in a man's chart, the traditional significator of the spouse. Taurus is one of the two signs Venus owns, the other being Libra, and a planet in its own sign is said to act according to its nature without obstruction. The question this page tries to answer is what that nature looks like when it is given room, and what else must be true before it can be read as a strength.

What it traditionally signifies

Taurus is a fixed earth sign, and the ownership gives this Venus a settled, tangible quality. The classical descriptions mention a liking for good food, pleasant surroundings, fabric, fragrance and music, a sweet or pleasing voice, and affection that is shown through steady presence rather than words. Taste is conservative in the best sense: things are chosen for how they last. Loyalty, once given, is not easily withdrawn, and the person tends to be at ease in their own body.

The same fixity has another face. Pleasure can tip into indulgence, steadiness into inertia, and affection into possessiveness, where the partner or the comfort is held on to as a kind of property. Venus in Taurus can find change hard to welcome even when it is overdue, and can measure its own worth, or another's, by what is owned. The tradition does not describe a planet in its own sign as flawless; it describes it as fully itself.

The nakshatra adjusts the picture: Krittika, ruled by the Sun, adds a critical and discerning edge; Rohini, the Moon's nakshatra, is the richest and most sensual expression of the sign; Mrigashira, ruled by Mars, brings a searching restlessness that Taurus alone would not have. The house then decides what the strength is spent on. In the second house it describes family, speech and the pull of possessions; in the fourth, the home and its comforts; in the seventh, a partnership chosen for stability; in the twelfth, private pleasures and expenditure.

What it does not mean

A planet in its own sign is a statement about the planet's condition, not about the life. Venus in Taurus does not promise a comfortable marriage, a wealthy household or an easy relationship with pleasure. It can sit in the sixth or eighth house, be hemmed in by Saturn and Mars, or lose its ground in the navamsa, and each of those matters. It is not a verdict on appearance or charm, and it is not a prediction about money: Venus signifies the enjoyment of resources, while the second and eleventh houses and their lords signify the resources themselves.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which house holds Venus, and does that house support comfort and partnership or test them?
  2. 02Which nakshatra is Venus in: Krittika, Rohini or Mrigashira?
  3. 03Does Saturn, Mars or Rahu aspect Venus, and is Venus combust by a nearby Sun?
  4. 04What sign does Venus take in the navamsa, and does it keep its strength there?
  5. 05Is the Venus mahadasha running, finished or still to come?

In practice

In practice the ownership is treated as a starting point. A careful reader notes that Venus is strong by sign, then asks whether anything undercuts that: a dusthana house, a harsh aspect, a weak navamsa, combustion. If nothing does, the steadiness of Taurus can be described with some confidence; if something does, the strength is still there but the way it expresses itself changes. The running dasha decides when any of this is active. Envisstack readings name each of those placements and the dates behind them, so a sentence can be checked rather than taken on trust.
