Ketu in Gemini

Ketu's position is always half of a pair. When the south node is in Gemini, the north node, Rahu, is in Sagittarius, and the two are read as one axis running across the chart. Neither node has a body or a light; they are the points where eclipses can occur, and Vedic astrology gives them the weight of grahas because of that. Ketu's themes are detachment, inward perception, sudden endings and what one has already mastered and outgrown. Gemini is a dual air sign ruled by Mercury: talk, trade, writing, siblings, curiosity and the quick exchange of information.

What it traditionally signifies

Gemini is where the second main school of nodal dignity places Ketu's debilitation, since that school exalts Ketu in Sagittarius, the opposite sign. The Parashari scheme found in many editions does not treat Gemini this way, and some of those lists give Gemini to Rahu as its moolatrikona. So a reader who calls Ketu weak here should say which tradition they follow; others will read the placement on its sign lord and nakshatra alone.

Descriptively, Ketu in Mercury's air sign is often read as a mind that does not trust its own cleverness. The person may have a natural knack for words, numbers or technical detail and yet feel that facts and chatter are not the point. Some classical commentators associate the placement with a terse or unusual manner of speaking, an interest in scripts, codes or sacred language, and a distance from siblings or neighbours. The positive face is discernment: an ability to see through information to what actually matters. The less comfortable face is scattered attention, or a dismissiveness towards ordinary communication that others need. Rahu in Sagittarius supplies the counter-pull, an appetite for belief, philosophy, teachers and the larger meaning of things.

The nakshatras here give three distinct shades. The last two padas of Mrigashira, ruled by Mars, add searching restlessness. Ardra, ruled by Rahu, is associated with Rudra and the storm, and Ketu in Rahu's own nakshatra is read as an intense, unsettled combination that breaks old patterns of thought. The first three padas of Punarvasu, ruled by Jupiter, are about return and renewal, and soften the node considerably.

What it does not mean

Ketu in Gemini does not mean poor intelligence, a speech problem or a broken bond with siblings. It is not a forecast about education, work or any relationship. Even in the school that calls it debilitated, the label is read alongside Mercury's condition, the house the sign occupies and the running dasha, and those usually decide more than the sign.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which tradition of nodal dignity does the reader follow, and does it treat Gemini as debilitation for Ketu?
  2. 02Is Ketu in Mrigashira, Ardra or Punarvasu?
  3. 03Where is Mercury, the sign lord, and is it combust, retrograde or with a node?
  4. 04Which houses do Gemini and Sagittarius occupy from the lagna?
  5. 05Is a Ketu, Rahu or Mercury period running now?

In practice

In practice the Gemini Ketu is read through Mercury first, since a node delivers much of what its dispositor holds. Then the axis is placed in houses, so that the reader can tell whether it runs across the third and ninth, the sixth and twelfth, or another pair. Planets within a few degrees of either node are weighed next, and finally the dasha. Lipta readings cite those placements and the periods in which they apply.
