Ketu in Libra

Libra, ruled by Venus, is a movable air sign of balance, fairness, negotiation, partnership and trade; it is also the sign where Saturn is exalted and the Sun debilitated. When Ketu, the south lunar node, sits here, Rahu, the north node, is in Aries, because the two always lie in opposite signs. Neither node is a physical planet; both are points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, and the tradition reads them together as an axis. Ketu brings themes of detachment, intuition and things already learned; Rahu brings appetite and the unfamiliar.

What it traditionally signifies

Ketu in Libra is traditionally read as an instinctive, almost effortless sense of fairness and proportion, joined to a reserve about depending on others. The person may be good at smoothing a room, mediating a dispute or seeing both sides, and yet feel that the social dance is not where they truly live. Some commentators describe a cool detachment within partnership: not coldness, but a feeling that one could manage alone if needed. Because Libra is the seventh sign of the natural zodiac, readers sometimes link this to relationships, but the sign is a natural theme, not the seventh house of a particular chart.

The opposite node shapes the reading. Rahu in Aries hungers for self-direction, initiative and personal courage, so the axis is commonly read as a movement away from always accommodating and towards acting on one's own account. The constructive version is a person who keeps their sense of justice while learning to assert it. The less settled version swings between people-pleasing and abrupt independence.

The nakshatras give the detail. In the last two padas of Chitra, ruled by Mars, Ketu takes on design, craft and a crisp aesthetic. Swati, ruled by Rahu, is the young shoot moved by the wind: independent, adaptable and commercially minded, and Ketu in Rahu's nakshatra is read as an interesting crossing of the two nodes' themes. The first three padas of Vishakha, ruled by Jupiter, add purpose and a single-minded aim. Venus, as sign lord, then decides much of how this Ketu is expressed.

What it does not mean

Ketu in Libra does not predict separation, an absent partner, or difficulty in marriage, and it is not a judgement on anyone's capacity for closeness. Marriage is read from the seventh house, its lord, Venus and the navamsha, and a node in the natural seventh sign does not override them. None of the common nodal dignity schemes treats Libra as exaltation or debilitation for Ketu.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Is Ketu in Chitra, Swati or Vishakha?
  2. 02Where is Venus, the sign lord, and is it strong or afflicted?
  3. 03Which houses do Libra and Aries occupy from the lagna?
  4. 04Is Saturn or the Sun in Libra with Ketu, and how close are they?
  5. 05Is a Ketu, Rahu or Venus period running now?

In practice

In practice the Libra Ketu is read with Venus, then with the houses of the Libra and Aries axis, then with any planet near either node. For one lagna the axis may run across the first and seventh houses, for another across the fourth and tenth, and those readings differ substantially. The dasha says which years bring the axis forward. Lipta readings cite the placements and dates behind each statement.
