Ketu in the 11th House

The eleventh house is the eleventh sign from the lagna, taken whole in the whole-sign scheme Lipta uses. It governs gains, friends and ambitions: income and its sources, fulfilment of desires, elder siblings, social circles, networks, patrons and the communities one belongs to. It is an upachaya, the last and often considered the strongest of the houses of growth. Ketu, the south node of the Moon, is a sensitive point and not a body, associated in the tradition with detachment, intuition and spiritual release. With Ketu in the eleventh, Rahu is in the fifth, so the reading spans the axis between shared gain and personal creation.

What it traditionally signifies

The eleventh house is one of the places where classical and later authors most often say any planet, including a node, can do well, since it is the house of fulfilment. Ketu in the eleventh is traditionally read as a detached relationship with gain and desire: the person may receive what they work for without clinging to it, may hold ambitions loosely, and may be content with a few real friends rather than a wide circle. Some commentators describe gains that come through unusual, technical or spiritual channels, or through quiet work rather than self-promotion. The constructive reading is generosity, an absence of envy, and an ability to let go of goals that no longer matter.

The harder face is a sense that what is gained does not satisfy, indifference to networking that others find essential, or distance from elder siblings or from social groups. Rahu in the fifth then pulls appetite towards personal creativity, intellect, romance, children, speculation and self-expression, and the common modern reading treats the axis as a movement from collective achievement towards the work that is personally one's own. These are tendencies of emphasis rather than events.

The sign on the eleventh and the condition of its lord carry much of the reading, along with Jupiter, the natural significator of gains and elder siblings in many schemes. If nodal aspects are used, an eleventh-house Ketu would aspect the third, fifth and seventh houses; others give no aspects to the nodes, and the question remains open.

What it does not mean

Ketu in the eleventh house does not predict a lack of income, the loss of friends, or a difficult relationship with elder siblings, and it is not a promise of wealth through any channel either. Gains are read from the eleventh and second houses, their lords, Jupiter and the dasha together. Rahu in the fifth is not a forecast about children, romance or speculation.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which sign is on the eleventh house, and where is the eleventh lord?
  2. 02Is any planet sitting with Ketu in the eleventh or with Rahu in the fifth?
  3. 03What is the condition of Jupiter and of the second house?
  4. 04How is the fifth lord placed, given Rahu's presence in its house?
  5. 05Is a Ketu or Rahu dasha running, or the eleventh lord's period?

In practice

In practice an eleventh-house Ketu is read with the eleventh lord and Jupiter, then Rahu in the fifth is weighed against the fifth lord. The upachaya principle suggests the placement grows steadier with age, and the dasha shows when the axis is in the foreground. Lipta readings cite the placements and dates behind each statement, so a line about gains or friends can be checked.
