Ketu in the 1st House

The first house is the lagna itself, the sign rising in the east at the moment of birth. Lipta counts houses by whole signs, so the entire rising sign is the first house. It governs the self, the body and temperament: how a person meets the world, their vitality, and the lens through which every other house is read. It is both a kendra and a trikona, the most important single house in the chart. Ketu is the south lunar node, a point rather than a body, associated with detachment, intuition and release. When Ketu is in the first, Rahu is always in the seventh, so this is a reading of the self and partnership axis.

What it traditionally signifies

Ketu in the lagna is traditionally read as a self that does not cling to its own image. Classical and later commentators describe a person who may seem quiet, inward or hard to read, who acts from instinct rather than calculation, and who is often more interested in inner experience than in how they appear. Some speak of an unusual or ascetic quality in manner, and a natural pull towards spiritual practice or solitary study. The constructive side is self-possession without vanity, intuition that can be relied on, and an ability to drop roles when they no longer fit.

The less comfortable side is an uncertain sense of identity, a feeling of being slightly out of step with one's surroundings, or a tendency to neglect the practical care of oneself. Rahu in the seventh then directs appetite outward: towards partners, the public, contracts and the people one meets face to face. The common modern reading treats the axis as a lesson in relationship, with the familiar ground being self-reliance and the growth lying in engagement with others. This is a description of emphasis, not a judgement on any marriage.

The sign on the lagna, and the condition of its lord, change the reading a great deal, since Ketu delivers much of what its dispositor holds. Ketu in a Scorpio or Sagittarius lagna, signs that some schools treat as strong for it, is read differently from Ketu in a Taurus or Gemini lagna, which other schools treat as weak. On the question of Ketu's aspects, many readers give the nodes the fifth, seventh and ninth aspects like Jupiter, so a first-house Ketu would touch the fifth, seventh and ninth; others give the nodes no aspects at all, and the authorities do not agree.

What it does not mean

Ketu in the first house does not predict ill health, an accident, an unhappy marriage or a life alone. It is not a verdict on the body or on relationships, and its partner, Rahu in the seventh, is not a statement about any spouse. Because the lagna changes roughly every two hours, the placement is only as certain as the birth time; a few minutes can move Ketu into the twelfth or the second, and the readings differ.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which sign is rising, and where is its lord, Ketu's dispositor?
  2. 02Is any planet sitting with Ketu in the lagna, and how close in degrees?
  3. 03Is the birth time reliable enough to be sure Ketu is in the first and not the twelfth or second?
  4. 04What is the condition of the seventh house, where Rahu sits, and of the seventh lord?
  5. 05Is a Ketu or Rahu dasha or antardasha running now?

In practice

In practice a first-house Ketu is read with the lagna lord, the Moon and any conjunctions, and then the seventh-house Rahu is weighed against the seventh lord and Venus. The dasha sequence shows when the axis is in the foreground; Ketu's mahadasha runs seven years and Rahu's eighteen. Lipta readings cite those placements and dates, so each sentence can be checked against the chart.
