Ketu in Sagittarius
Sagittarius is Jupiter's dual fire sign, the sign of dharma, teachers, higher learning, long journeys and belief. When Ketu sits here, Rahu is in Gemini, the opposite sign, and the two lunar nodes are read as one axis stretched between faith and information. Ketu has no body; it is the descending point of the Moon's orbit, linked in the tradition with detachment, insight, spiritual release and what the person has already absorbed so deeply that it is taken for granted. Sagittarius opens with Mula, which is one of Ketu's own nakshatras, so this is a sign where Ketu's presence is felt strongly.

What it traditionally signifies
Several respected authorities hold Ketu to be exalted in Sagittarius, with Rahu exalted in Gemini, and some lists also give Sagittarius as Ketu's moolatrikona. The scheme found in many Parashari editions instead exalts Ketu in Scorpio and Rahu in Taurus. Both positions appear in serious literature, so it is fair to say that a good number of readers treat this as one of Ketu's strongest signs while others give it no formal dignity; the reader should say which view they hold.
The descriptive picture is of a person with an inborn sense of the sacred or the philosophical who is nonetheless wary of dogma. Faith may come easily and need no defending; teachers may be respected and outgrown; the person may know a great deal about belief systems without belonging fully to any. The strong face is wisdom without pretension and an instinct for what is essential in a teaching. The less comfortable face is restlessness with every framework, or a reluctance to commit to a path once its limits are seen. Rahu in Gemini then pulls towards the practical, the communicative and the commercial: learning the details, speaking to many people, and engaging with the ordinary marketplace of ideas.
Mula, ruled by Ketu itself, means root, and is associated with Nirriti and the pulling up of things to see what lies beneath; Ketu here is read as radical in the literal sense, going to the root. The start of Mula is a gandanta junction with Scorpio. Purva Ashadha, ruled by Venus, is the invincible one, giving conviction and persuasive power. The first pada of Uttara Ashadha, ruled by the Sun, adds steadiness and a sense of final victory. Jupiter's condition, as sign lord, shapes everything above.
What it does not mean
Ketu in Sagittarius does not mean a person is destined for renunciation, a guru role or a break with religion, and it says nothing fixed about the father, fortune or travel, which the ninth house and its lord address in a particular chart. Calling it exalted, on the schools that do, describes the node's comfort, not a promise of good fortune.
Questions it raises
- 01Which nodal dignity scheme does the reader follow, and does it exalt Ketu here?
- 02Is Ketu in Mula, Purva Ashadha or the first pada of Uttara Ashadha, and close to the gandanta degree?
- 03Where is Jupiter, the sign lord, and is it strong or weak?
- 04Which houses do Sagittarius and Gemini occupy from the lagna?
- 05Is a Ketu, Rahu or Jupiter period running?
In practice
In practice the Sagittarius Ketu is read with Jupiter first, then with the houses of the axis and any conjunctions. A Ketu in Mula in the ninth house with Rahu in the third is a very different chart from the same sign in the sixth with Rahu in the twelfth. The dasha shows when the axis is active. Lipta readings cite each placement and date behind a statement, so you can see what it rests on.
