Sun in Sagittarius

Sagittarius is a dual fire sign ruled by Jupiter, the planet of wisdom, teachers and dharma, and Jupiter is one of the Sun's firm friends. The Sun passes through sidereal Sagittarius from about mid-December to mid-January, the month known in the south as Margazhi and widely kept as a season of early-morning devotion. Placed here, the Sun's light is read as being directed by belief: a self that wants its authority to rest on what is right, not merely on what is strong.

What it traditionally signifies

The traditional reading is of a principled, generous and outward-looking nature. Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the natural zodiac, tied to father, teacher, faith, law and long journeys, and the Sun, already the karaka of the father, gives these themes a personal force. Classical authors associate the Sun in Jupiter's signs with respect from elders and the learned, an interest in religion, philosophy or law, and a dignity that comes from conviction. Leadership here tends to take the form of guiding, advising or upholding a standard.

The less comfortable side is certainty. A Sun lit by conviction can become self-righteous, preach where it should listen, or treat its own view of what is right as the only one. Readers describe impatience with those who do not share the same ideals, a tendency to promise more than can be delivered, and a pride that is invested in being correct. The dual quality of the sign also gives restlessness, a pull towards the next cause or the next horizon.

The nakshatra makes a clear difference. Mula, ruled by Ketu, is about roots and uprooting, a search that goes down to foundations and sometimes tears them up; Purva Ashadha, ruled by Venus, the Sun's adversary, brings persuasion, invigoration and a sense of being undefeatable; the first pada of Uttara Ashadha belongs to the Sun's own nakshatra and is linked with lasting, well-earned victory. Mercury will be in Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn.

What it does not mean

A Sagittarius Sun does not make anyone a teacher, judge or priest, and it is not a prediction of foreign travel, higher study or a spiritual life. It does not say that the father will be a guide, or anything about his health. Being in a friend's sign is a support, not a verdict. Whether the principled face or the preachy face shows depends on the house, the strength of Jupiter and the planets that join or aspect the Sun.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which house from the lagna holds the Sun, and does it link with the ninth house of father and dharma?
  2. 02Is the Sun in Mula, Purva Ashadha or Uttara Ashadha?
  3. 03Where is Jupiter, the sign lord, and is it strong or afflicted?
  4. 04Do Saturn or Rahu aspect or join the Sun?
  5. 05Which mahadasha is running, and is it the Sun's or Jupiter's?

In practice

In practice a Sagittarius Sun is read through Jupiter. A dignified Jupiter lends the Sun wisdom and proportion; a weak or afflicted one leaves conviction without much judgement. The reader then places the Sun by house, checks the ninth house and its lord for the father and teacher themes, and looks at the running period. Lipta readings cite the placements and dates each statement rests on, so you can see the reasoning.
