Sun in Virgo

The Sun enters sidereal Virgo around the middle of September and leaves around the middle of October. Virgo is a dual earth sign ruled by Mercury, which the Sun treats as neutral, and it is also the sign of Mercury's exaltation. The fortnight of Pitru Paksha, when families honour their ancestors, often falls while the Sun is in Virgo, a pleasing coincidence for a planet that signifies the father and the line one comes from. In a birth chart, though, a Virgo Sun is read mainly as a self that earns its dignity through skill.

What it traditionally signifies

Earth and Mercury together give the Sun a practical, exacting tone. The traditional reading is of a person whose self-respect comes from competence: doing a job properly, understanding the detail, being of use. Classical descriptions of the Sun in Virgo mention learning, skill with writing, numbers or crafts, and a modest manner that hides considerable pride in good workmanship. Authority here is that of the expert rather than the ruler, the person consulted rather than obeyed.

The shadow is criticism, of oneself first and then of others. A planet that wants to shine, placed in a sign that wants to correct, can turn its light on flaws: an inner standard that is rarely met, worry about getting things wrong, and a habit of serving without asking for recognition and then resenting its absence. Some readers describe a reserved Sun that is slow to claim its place in a room. Virgo is the sixth sign of the natural zodiac, carrying the themes of service, routine and effort, which is one reason the texts read this Sun as industrious.

The last three padas of Uttara Phalguni, the Sun's own nakshatra, give a dutiful and reliable expression; Hasta, ruled by the Moon, is linked with dexterity and the work of the hands; the first half of Chitra, ruled by Mars, adds an eye for design and a sharper ambition. Mercury often sits in Virgo beside the Sun, exalted and in its own sign, forming the Budha-Aditya combination; how much a close Sun dims it is a matter on which authorities differ.

What it does not mean

A Virgo Sun is not a prediction of work in medicine, accounting or service, and it says nothing about health; the sixth-sign associations describe themes, not conditions. It does not mean a lack of confidence either, since modest expression and low self-worth are different things. The Budha-Aditya yoga is often quoted as a sign of intelligence, but because Mercury travels so close to the Sun the combination appears in a very large share of charts, so on its own it says little.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which house from the lagna holds the Sun, and in which house does Leo fall?
  2. 02Is Mercury with the Sun in Virgo, and how many degrees apart are they?
  3. 03Is the Sun in Uttara Phalguni, Hasta or Chitra?
  4. 04Is Venus, debilitated in Virgo, also in the sign, and do Jupiter or Saturn aspect the Sun?
  5. 05Which dasha is running, and does it bring the Sun or Mercury forward?

In practice

A Virgo Sun is read as a working Sun, so the reader asks three things: what it is working on, which the house and the house of Leo answer; how well Mercury, its dispositor, supports it; and which periods bring it to the front. Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun and may share the sign, where it is debilitated, adding its own note to the picture. Lipta readings cite those placements and dates, so each line can be checked.
