Sun in Leo
Leo is the only sign the Sun rules, and it also holds the Sun's moolatrikona, the band from 0 to 20 degrees where classical authors say a planet acts most fully in its own office; the last ten degrees count as ordinary own sign. The Sun passes through sidereal Leo from roughly mid-August to mid-September. A fixed fire sign, Leo gives the Sun nobody to negotiate with: host and guest are the same planet, and the sign's themes of rulership, dignity and display are the Sun's own.

What it traditionally signifies
The traditional reading is of dignity, self-possession and an easy relationship with authority. A planet in its moolatrikona is described by Parashara as giving steady, reliable results, and the commentators picture a Leo Sun as generous, proud, loyal to its own principles, comfortable being seen and responsible for those under its protection. Leadership here is less about seizing a role than about assuming that the role was always one's own. A strong sense of honour, of what is fitting and of keeping one's word is often mentioned.
The weaker side is the same self-possession with nothing to check it. With no other lord to answer to, the Sun can become vain, need constant acknowledgment, find it hard to share credit, and hear criticism as an insult to its dignity. Fixed signs resist change, so a Leo Sun may hold on to a position, an opinion or a grievance long after it has stopped serving anyone. Readers also observe that a strongly independent Sun can find collaboration harder than command.
The three nakshatras of Leo are distinct. Magha, ruled by Ketu, is associated with ancestors, lineage and inherited position, a seat received rather than built; Purva Phalguni, ruled by Venus, adds pleasure, creativity and a liking for ease; the first pada of Uttara Phalguni, the Sun's own nakshatra, returns to duty, patronage and the keeping of promises. Mercury will be in Cancer, Leo or Virgo, and any planet near the Sun's degree is combust.
What it does not mean
A Sun in its own sign is not a promise of status, wealth, political office or public fame, and it does not describe the father's life or health. Strength by sign measures the planet's comfort, not the size of the stage it is given. A Leo Sun in the twelfth house, or closely joined by Saturn or Rahu, reads very differently from one in the tenth. Nor does it make anyone arrogant: whether pride shows as dignity or as vanity is decided by the rest of the chart, especially the Moon and the lagna.
Questions it raises
- 01Is the Sun within the moolatrikona band of 0 to 20 degrees, or in the last ten degrees of Leo?
- 02Is it in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first pada of Uttara Phalguni?
- 03Which house from the lagna does Leo, and therefore the Sun, occupy?
- 04Does Saturn, the Sun's natural adversary, aspect or join the Sun, or do Rahu or Ketu sit with it?
- 05Is the Sun's mahadasha or antardasha running now?
In practice
With a Leo Sun the reader skips the dispositor step, since the Sun is its own sign lord, and moves straight to house, aspects and company. That makes the house the decisive fact: Leo rising, Leo in the tenth and Leo in the eighth give three very different readings of the same dignity. The dasha then shows when this self-contained Sun is given the floor. Lipta readings cite the house, the degree and the period dates each statement depends on.
