Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra
Uttara Phalguni is one of the nakshatras that straddles two signs. It begins at 26°40' of Leo and ends at 10°00' of Virgo, so its first pada belongs to the Sun's fiery sign and its last three to Mercury's earthy one. The Sun is its Vimshottari lord, with a mahadasha of six years, the shortest period in the cycle. Tradition pairs it with Purva Phalguni as the back legs of the same bed, assigns it the deity Aryaman, the Aditya of patronage, contracts and honourable friendship, and places it in the manushya gana. Since the Vimshottari dasha opens with the lord of the Moon's nakshatra, a birth with the Moon here starts inside a Sun period.

What it traditionally signifies
The temperament usually read from an Uttara Phalguni Moon is steady, dependable and quietly generous. Where the front legs of the bed are about enjoyment, the back legs are about what holds the enjoyment up: commitments kept, favours returned, people looked after. The texts describe someone who is reliable in friendship, who prefers an agreed arrangement to an open-ended one, and who takes a certain satisfaction in being the person others lean on.
The other face of the same disposition is rigidity. Loyalty can become an expectation of gratitude, helpfulness can become control, and the dislike of broken agreements can harden into resentment that lasts. The Sun as lord brings a sense of personal authority to all this, so the Uttara Phalguni Moon often feels responsible for things it was never asked to carry.
The padas split along the sign boundary. The first pada, still in Leo with a Sagittarius navamsa, is the most expansive and principled; the second, in Virgo with a Capricorn navamsa, is the most practical and patient; the third, in Virgo with an Aquarius navamsa, is the most oriented to service and groups; the fourth, in Virgo with a Pisces navamsa, is the most forgiving and the least interested in keeping score.
What it does not mean
A Sun-ruled Moon is not a promise of a leadership role, a strong father, a lasting marriage or any particular outcome in the places where this nakshatra likes to be of use. Reliability is a tendency, not a result. The short Sun dasha at the start of life is simply where the count begins; it says nothing about how the following periods will go. And the sign boundary matters: a Leo pada and a Virgo pada are read differently enough that the nakshatra alone will not tell you which you are looking at.
Questions it raises
- 01Is the Moon in the Leo pada or one of the three Virgo padas, and which house does that sign occupy from the lagna?
- 02How is the Sun, the nakshatra lord, placed by sign, house and aspect?
- 03If the Moon is in Virgo, how is Mercury, the sign lord, faring, and if in Leo, what is the Sun's condition as sign lord too?
- 04Which mahadasha is running now, and where does its lord stand in relation to the Moon?
- 05Is Saturn transiting the sign before, on or after the Moon's sign, which is the test for sade sati?
In practice
Read with the whole chart, Uttara Phalguni is a disposition towards keeping faith with people and agreements, and the chart around it decides where that disposition lands and how much it costs. A careful reader looks at the Moon's house, at the Sun, at the sign lord of the pada, and at the dasha before saying anything about the year ahead. Envisstack readings show those placements and dates alongside each sentence so you can weigh them yourself.
