Rohini Nakshatra
Rohini is the fourth nakshatra, the heart of Taurus from 10°00' to 23°20', and the only one of the first nine whose Vimshottari lord is the Moon itself. The Moon's dasha runs ten years. Tradition gives Rohini an ox cart as its symbol, Brahma, the creator, as its deity, and places it in the manushya gana. The Vimshottari cycle begins from whichever nakshatra holds the Moon at birth, so a Rohini Moon begins life in a Moon mahadasha, with the balance of those ten years set by the Moon's exact degree.

What it traditionally signifies
Rohini is the nakshatra the texts associate most closely with the Moon's own nature, and the Puranic story of the Moon preferring Rohini among his wives is usually told to explain why. The classical reading of a Moon here is of a warm, fertile, attractive temperament: a mind that grows things, whether gardens, businesses, families or friendships, and that takes visible pleasure in beauty, food, music and comfort. The ox cart is slow and heavily laden, and the image is meant literally; Rohini carries a great deal and does not hurry. Brahma as deity adds the theme of creation in its broadest sense, the capacity to bring something new into the world and sustain it.
The same warmth has a possessive side. Tradition notes that Rohini holds on, to people, to places and to opinions, and can feel any loosening of a bond as a loss. The appetite for pleasure can tip into indulgence, and the attractiveness the texts describe can draw attention the person did not ask for. Because the Moon rules both the sign's exaltation and the nakshatra, there is also a tendency to live very much in the feelings of the moment, which reads as presence to some and as moodiness to others.
The padas place the Moon in four navamsas. The first, in Aries, is the most energetic and the most willing to start things. The second, in Taurus, is Rohini at its most characteristic, settled and sensory, and is vargottama, which tradition reads as reinforcing the sign. The third, in Gemini, brings talk, curiosity and a lighter touch. The fourth, in Cancer, is the most emotional and the most tied to home and mother.
What it does not mean
A Rohini Moon is not a promise of beauty, wealth, a happy marriage or many children, however often those words appear beside the nakshatra's name in popular writing. The exalted Moon and its own nakshatra together describe the strength of the mind, not the ease of a life, and a strong Moon in a hard house under a testing dasha still has a hard year. Nor does Rohini decide whether a person is generous or grasping; the texts describe both, and the house and the aspects to the Moon tip the balance one way or the other.
Questions it raises
- 01Which house does the Moon occupy from the lagna, and which planets sit with it or aspect it?
- 02Is Venus, the lord of Taurus, well placed, since the Moon's nakshatra lord here is the Moon itself and Venus becomes the next planet to check?
- 03Which pada is the Moon in, and is it the vargottama second pada?
- 04Which mahadasha is running now, and has the Moon's own period already passed?
- 05Is Saturn transiting Aries, Taurus or Gemini, which would mark sade sati for a Taurus Moon?
In practice
In practice Rohini is usually the strongest Moon a reader meets, and the work lies in finding what limits it. A careful reader looks at the house first, then at Venus as the sign lord, then at Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu for any aspect that would disturb the Moon's ease. The running dasha and Saturn's transit relative to Taurus set the timing. Only with those in view does the ox cart become a description of a particular person in a particular year. Envisstack readings cite the placements and dates each sentence rests on, so you can see what is description and what is timing.
