Mrigashira Nakshatra

Mrigashira is the fifth nakshatra. It begins at 23°20' of Taurus and ends at 6°40' of Gemini, so its first two padas belong to Taurus and the last two to Gemini. Its Vimshottari lord is Mars, whose dasha lasts seven years. Tradition gives it the head of a deer as its symbol, Soma, the Moon god, as its deity, and places it in the deva gana. Because the Moon's nakshatra at birth decides where the Vimshottari cycle begins, a Mrigashira Moon starts life in a Mars period, with whatever part of the seven years the Moon's degree leaves over.

What it traditionally signifies

The deer in the symbol is not grazing; it is looking up, nose to the wind, about to move. The classical reading of a Mrigashira Moon is of a seeker: curious, alert, quickly bored, drawn to whatever is just out of reach. The old story of Prajapati pursuing Rohini through the sky and the Moon's role in it is told to explain the restlessness, and the texts describe a gentle, enquiring temperament that is good company, interested in many things, and hard to pin down. Soma as deity adds charm and a feel for pleasure, so the search is rarely grim.

Mars as lord supplies the engine. It keeps the deer moving, gives the curiosity a competitive edge, and in a difficult chart it can turn enquiry into suspicion and restlessness into a habit of leaving before things are finished. Tradition notes that a Mrigashira Moon may find commitment harder than attraction and may need to learn the difference between a new interest and a better one. The deva gana label points to the lighter side: sociable, well meaning, more inclined to look than to grasp.

The padas split cleanly by sign. The first two, in Taurus with Leo and Virgo navamsas, keep the searching within something stable, the first more expressive and the second more careful and analytical. The third and fourth, in Gemini with Libra and Scorpio navamsas, are more mobile and more verbal, the third sociable and balanced, the fourth probing and private, the most likely to turn the search inward.

What it does not mean

A Mrigashira Moon does not mean a person cannot settle, keep a job or stay in a marriage, and it is not a forecast of travel, many partners or a wandering career. The restlessness the texts describe is a quality of attention, not a destiny, and a Moon in a fixed house with a steady Mars and a patient dasha can carry that curiosity through a long and consistent life. Nor does the Mars lordship make the placement aggressive by default; Mars here is the energy behind the question, not a temper.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Is the Moon in a Taurus pada or a Gemini pada, which decides the Moon sign and the whole frame of the reading?
  2. 02Where is Mars, the nakshatra lord, and is it dignified, afflicted or in a sign that quiets it?
  3. 03Which house holds the Moon, and does that house lend itself to movement or to staying put?
  4. 04Which mahadasha is running, and has the Mars period already come and gone?
  5. 05Is Saturn transiting the sign before, on or after your Moon sign, which would mark sade sati?

In practice

In practice the sign split is the first thing a careful reader settles for a Mrigashira Moon, since a Taurus Moon and a Gemini Moon start from quite different places. Mars is examined next, because its condition decides whether the deer's alertness is pleasant curiosity or nervous vigilance. The house, the running dasha and Saturn's transit relative to the Moon sign then set what any given year asks of it. Envisstack readings cite the placements and dates behind each sentence, so you can separate the temperament from the timing.
