Pushya Nakshatra

Pushya is the eighth nakshatra and lies wholly within Cancer, from 3°20' to 16°40' of the Moon's own sign. Its Vimshottari lord is Saturn, whose mahadasha is the longest in the cycle at nineteen years. Tradition gives Pushya the udder of a cow as its symbol, with a lotus and an arrow also mentioned, names Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods, as its deity, and assigns it to the deva gana. The lord of the Moon's nakshatra opens the Vimshottari sequence, so a Moon in Pushya means a life that begins inside a Saturn period, however much of the nineteen years the Moon's degree had left.

What it traditionally signifies

Pushya is often called the most gentle of the nakshatras in the classical lists, and its symbol says why: an udder gives milk without being asked. A Moon here is usually read as a temperament built around care, nourishment and steadiness. The texts speak of a person who is reliable, religious in a quiet way, protective of family and dependants, and inclined to put duty ahead of appetite. Brihaspati as deity lends an instinct for counsel and ritual, and a wish to be useful to the people around them.

Saturn as lord gives the gentleness a backbone. It supplies discipline, patience, a long memory and a willingness to do unglamorous work for years, and it is the reason Pushya is read as productive as well as kind. The same Saturn can make the caring heavy: a sense of obligation that never rests, a reluctance to accept help, a conservatism that mistrusts anything new, and a tendency to feel responsible for outcomes that were never in their hands. The Moon in its own sign amplifies feeling, so both the warmth and the worry run deep.

The padas sit in Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio navamsas. The first adds a touch of pride and a wish to be seen doing good; the second is the most practical and service minded; the third is the most sociable and concerned with fairness; the fourth is the most private and intense, where care can shade into control.

What it does not mean

A Pushya Moon is not a promise of a happy family, a caring profession or children, and it does not mean a person will be comfortable or provided for. The nourishing quality is a disposition, not a supply, and when Saturn is weak or the Moon sits in a hard house it may appear chiefly as the strain of looking after others. Nor does Saturn's lordship make the placement cold; here Saturn is the patience that lets the care last, not a withholding.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which house holds the Moon, and is that house about home and family or something that asks the carer to look outward?
  2. 02Where is Saturn, the nakshatra lord, and what is its dignity, its company and its aspects?
  3. 03Which planets sit with or aspect the Moon in Cancer, since they colour how the nourishing instinct is expressed?
  4. 04Which mahadasha is running now, and how long ago did the Saturn period of birth end?
  5. 05Is Saturn passing through Gemini, Cancer or Leo, which places a Cancer Moon under sade sati?

In practice

In practice a Pushya Moon is read by weighing Saturn and the Moon together. A reader checks the house the Moon occupies, who shares it, and what Saturn is doing elsewhere in the chart, then asks what the current dasha has brought to the fore. Only with those in hand does it make sense to say whether the care of Pushya is showing as quiet strength, as overwork, or as a duty that has become a burden. Envisstack readings cite the placements and dates behind each line, so you can tell the temperament from the moment.
