Ardra Nakshatra
Ardra is the sixth nakshatra, lying wholly inside Gemini from 6°40' to 20°00'. Its Vimshottari lord is Rahu, and the Rahu dasha runs eighteen years, the second longest in the cycle. Tradition gives Ardra a teardrop as its symbol, Rudra, the storm form of Shiva, as its deity, and places it in the manushya gana. The Vimshottari sequence takes its starting point from the Moon's nakshatra, so a person born with the Moon in Ardra begins life in a Rahu mahadasha, with the balance of the eighteen years fixed by the Moon's degree.

What it traditionally signifies
The name Ardra means moist, and the image behind it is the air after a storm has passed: washed, clear, sharper than before. Tradition reads a Moon here as a penetrating mind in a feeling body. The intellect is Gemini's, quick and verbal, but Rudra gives it force, so the classical descriptions speak of people who think hard, feel hard, and are at their best when something needs to be seen through to its root. There is a strong pull towards understanding how things work, which in modern life often turns into research, analysis, technology or any field where taking a problem apart is the job.
Rahu as lord is the unconventional element. It adds hunger, ambition and an appetite for what is foreign or new, and in a strained chart it can bring the storm without the clearing: emotional weather that turns quickly, a tendency to brood, and a sharp tongue used before the thought has settled. The teardrop is read two ways, as sorrow and as release, and the texts are honest that an Ardra Moon can feel its losses more keenly than most while also being the one who recovers with a clearer head. The manushya gana marks it as thoroughly human in its mix.
The four padas sit in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces navamsas. The first gives the intellect a philosophical, expansive cast and is usually the most buoyant. The second is the most disciplined and the most likely to turn the analysis into a career. The third is the most inventive and the most detached, where the Rahu quality of standing outside convention shows most. The fourth is the most sensitive, where the teardrop is felt rather than thought about.
What it does not mean
An Ardra Moon is not a sentence to a turbulent life, and the storm imagery should not be read as a forecast of grief, illness, separation or ruin. These are tendencies of temperament and perception, and the same nakshatra that is described as stormy in one list is described as brilliant in another. It is not a statement about marriage, money or health, and the Rahu lordship does not make the person untrustworthy or restless by rule; a well placed Rahu is read as sharpened intelligence and little else. Popular writing that treats Ardra as a mark against someone is not supported by the classical sources.
Questions it raises
- 01Which house does the Moon occupy, and is that house one where a probing mind is an asset?
- 02Where is Rahu, the nakshatra lord, and does it aspect or sit with the Moon?
- 03How is Mercury placed, as lord of Gemini, since it decides how much of the clarity reaches speech?
- 04Which mahadasha is running now, and has the Rahu period passed or is it still ahead?
- 05Is Saturn transiting Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, which would place sade sati on a Gemini Moon?
In practice
In practice an Ardra Moon is read through two planets rather than one: Rahu as nakshatra lord and Mercury as sign lord. A careful reader checks both before saying anything about the person, then looks at the Moon's house and the planets aspecting it, since those decide whether the storm clears or lingers. The running dasha and Saturn's transit relative to Gemini say what the current year is asking. Envisstack readings cite those placements and dates beside each sentence, so that the image of the storm stays tied to the chart that produced it.
