Shatabhisha Nakshatra
Shatabhisha sits in the heart of Aquarius, from 6°40' to 20°00', entirely within Saturn's air sign. Its Vimshottari lord is Rahu, and because the Moon's nakshatra at birth decides where the dasha cycle begins, a Shatabhisha Moon starts life in a Rahu mahadasha of eighteen years, with the balance at birth set by how much of the nakshatra the Moon had already covered. Eighteen years is the second longest period in the cycle, so a child born here can spend most of their youth under Rahu, and readers take care over how that node is placed.

What it traditionally signifies
The name means a hundred physicians, or a hundred healers, and the symbol tradition gives is an empty circle, sometimes a ring of a hundred stars or flowers. Its deity is Varuna, lord of the cosmic waters and keeper of oaths, and its gana is rakshasa, which the classical scheme uses for a strong-willed, unconventional temperament and nothing worse. The texts describe this Moon as reserved, perceptive and drawn to what lies beneath the surface: a mind that keeps its own counsel, prefers to work alone, and is interested in healing, investigation or any discipline that asks for secrecy and patience. Rahu adds a taste for the unusual and the foreign.
The empty circle has another reading. The same reserve can become isolation, and the same truth-seeking can tip into suspicion or a harsh judgement of people who fall short. Shatabhisha is often described as a Moon that takes a long time to trust and remembers a broken promise for years, which fits Varuna's role as the god who watches oaths.
The padas spread the quality differently. The first, in the Sagittarius navamsa, is the most open and philosophical. The second, in the Capricorn navamsa, is the most disciplined and the most likely to turn investigation into a method. The third, in the Aquarius navamsa, is vargottama and the purest expression of the nakshatra's independence. The fourth, in the Pisces navamsa, is the most intuitive and the most inclined to healing in a broad, compassionate sense.
What it does not mean
The hundred healers do not mean a career in medicine, and the reserve the texts describe is not a verdict of loneliness. A nakshatra cannot see the seventh house, the fifth house or the sixth, which is where questions of partnership, children and health are actually read, and this page makes no claim about any of them. A long Rahu dasha at the start of life is also not in itself a hardship; it is a period, and its character depends on where Rahu sits and what aspects it.
Questions it raises
- 01Which house does the Shatabhisha Moon fall in, and which pada?
- 02Where is Rahu, the nakshatra lord, and which planets conjoin or aspect it?
- 03How is Saturn, lord of Aquarius, placed in the chart?
- 04Which mahadasha is running now, and is Rahu's period behind you or still to come?
- 05Is Saturn transiting Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces, the sade sati signs for an Aquarius Moon?
In practice
A careful reader keeps Shatabhisha in proportion by putting it next to the house of the Moon, the condition of Rahu and Saturn, and the dasha in force, since those decide whether the nakshatra's reserve works as depth or as distance at a particular time. Envisstack readings show the placements and dates each sentence depends on.
