Sun in the 6th House

The sixth house is a dusthana, one of the three houses of difficulty, and also an upachaya, a house of growth. With whole-sign houses the Sun is there in the evening, a couple of hours after sunset. The sixth governs competition, opponents, debts, illness as a category, daily work and service, and the effort it takes to overcome obstacles. Tradition has a clear view of naturally fierce planets in this house: as in the third and the eleventh, a Sun in the sixth is usually counted a strong placement, because it is equipped to deal with what the house contains.

What it traditionally signifies

Classical texts praise a sixth-house Sun for victory over rivals, resilience, discipline and a capacity to work hard under pressure. Phaladeepika and others describe someone respected for handling conflict, who does not shrink from competition and who may hold authority in demanding, service-oriented settings. Modern readers often describe a person who thrives on solving problems, does well in structured work, and earns standing by being the one who gets difficult things done when others hesitate.

The other face is that the Sun's pride becomes invested in struggle. Readers describe a tendency to see opponents everywhere, to turn disagreements into contests, or to work so hard that rest is neglected. The sixth is also the house of illness as a theme, and the Sun's link with vitality leads some readers to describe a constitution that resists strain well, while older texts mention complaints of heat; neither is a statement about anyone's health. From the sixth the Sun aspects the twelfth, the house of expenditure, sleep and withdrawal, which is sometimes read as effort that costs rest, or spending tied to work.

For a Scorpio lagna the sixth is Aries, so the Sun is exalted and rules the tenth, strength in competition joined to career. For a Pisces lagna the sixth is Leo, the Sun's own sign, and it rules the sixth itself, a placement read as robust in service and in dealing with opposition. For a Taurus lagna the sixth is Libra, where the Sun is debilitated and rules the fourth, so conflicts are read as handled through compromise rather than confrontation.

What it does not mean

A sixth-house Sun does not predict illness, lawsuits, debt or enemies, and it does not mean a life of conflict. The dusthana label describes the kind of matters the house holds, not a misfortune waiting to happen. Nor is the placement's traditional strength a promise of winning anything in particular; it describes a capacity, and whether that capacity is called on depends on the sixth lord, on Mars and Saturn, and on the dasha.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which sign is the sixth house for this lagna, and what is the Sun's dignity there?
  2. 02Where is the sixth lord, and is it strong or weak?
  3. 03Which house does the Sun rule from this lagna, and what does placing that lord in the sixth suggest?
  4. 04Do Jupiter or Saturn aspect the Sun in the sixth?
  5. 05Which dasha is running, and does it involve the Sun?

In practice

A reader treats a sixth-house Sun as a fighting asset and then asks what it is fighting for. The house the Sun rules answers that; the sixth lord shows how the house's difficulties are carried; the twelfth, which the Sun aspects, shows what the effort costs. The dasha marks when the contest is live. Lipta readings cite those placements and dates, so each claim can be traced to the chart.
