Sun in the 4th House
The fourth house sits at the bottom of the chart, below the horizon, and with whole-sign houses the Sun occupies it roughly around midnight. It governs the mother, the home, land and vehicles, emotional security and the private life behind closed doors. It is a kendra, an angular house, but it is also where the Sun has no directional strength: Parashara gives the Sun dig bala in the tenth, and the fourth, directly opposite, is where that particular strength falls to nothing.

What it traditionally signifies
The tradition therefore reads a fourth-house Sun as a public planet placed in a private house. The texts describe a person whose sense of self is rooted in home, land and heritage, who wants to be the authority under their own roof, and who may take responsibility for the household early. Pride in the family home, in ancestral property or in a place of origin is often mentioned, and the Sun's link with the father brings him into the house of domestic life.
The harder face is unease. Older texts, Phaladeepika among them, associate this placement with a restless heart, friction over property or a strained domestic atmosphere. Modern readers translate this into a tension between the wish for personal authority and the give and take that family life requires, and into a sense that inner peace has to be built rather than inherited. Because the Sun is weak by direction here, its confidence may be less visible in public. Yet from the fourth it aspects the tenth, the house of career and standing, so its will is still pointed at the world; readers often describe people who pursue public goals from a carefully guarded private base.
For a Capricorn lagna the fourth is Aries, so the Sun is exalted there but rules the eighth, a strong planet carrying a complicated lordship. For a Taurus lagna the fourth is Leo, so the Sun is in its own sign and rules the fourth itself, which puts home and property at the centre. For a Cancer lagna the fourth is Libra, where the Sun is debilitated and rules the second, linking family resources with a quieter, negotiated authority at home.
What it does not mean
A fourth-house Sun is not a prediction about the mother's health, disputes over property, a move away from home or an unhappy family. The missing directional strength is one component of Shadbala, a technical measure, not a statement that the person lacks confidence. It also says nothing certain about education or vehicles. Those matters are read from the fourth lord, the Moon as karaka of the mother and the mind, Venus and Mars for comforts and land, and the dasha.
Questions it raises
- 01Which sign is the fourth house for this lagna, and what is the Sun's dignity there?
- 02Where are the fourth lord and the Moon, and are they strong?
- 03Which house does the Sun rule from this lagna through Leo?
- 04Is the tenth house, which the Sun aspects, occupied or strong?
- 05Which dasha is running, and does it involve the Sun or the fourth lord?
In practice
A careful reader takes a fourth-house Sun as a statement about where the self feels at home and who holds authority there, then tests it against the Moon and the fourth lord before saying anything about family. The aspect on the tenth is read with the tenth lord, and the dasha shows when domestic or public themes rise. Lipta readings cite those placements and dates, so you can follow the chain of reasoning.
