Venus in the 7th House

The seventh house is the house of the other person: the spouse, business partners, agreements, and the public one meets face to face. It is a kendra, opposite the lagna, and it is also one of the two maraka houses in longevity theory. Venus is the natural karaka of the seventh, the planet that signifies partnership, attraction and marriage in the classical scheme, and in a man's chart traditionally the wife. So a seventh-house Venus is a significator sitting in its own field of meaning. That makes it one of the most discussed placements in Vedic astrology, and the discussion is not as simple as it first appears.

What it traditionally signifies

The straightforward reading is warm. Phaladeepika and the manuals describe a seventh-house Venus as giving an attractive, cultured partner, a fondness for pleasure and company, and an ability to make agreements pleasant, which is why trade and the arts of negotiation are often mentioned. Modern readers speak of a person who blossoms in partnership, values beauty and courtesy in others, and has a natural gift for diplomacy.

The complication is the maxim karako bhava nashaya: a significator placed in the house it signifies may, according to several authorities, overload or strain that house. Applied here, some astrologers read a seventh-house Venus as heightened expectations of partnership, a strong appetite for romance that is hard to satisfy, or a tendency to idealise the partner. Others hold that the maxim applies with full force mainly when the karaka is weak or afflicted, and that a dignified Venus here simply strengthens the house. A balanced reading keeps both views in mind and lets the condition of Venus decide between them.

From the seventh Venus aspects the lagna, so partnership leaves its mark on the person's own manner and appearance. Dignity matters enormously. For an Aries lagna the seventh is Libra, own sign and moolatrikona, with Venus ruling the second and seventh; for a Scorpio lagna it is Taurus, own sign, with Venus ruling the seventh and twelfth; for a Virgo lagna it is Pisces, where Venus is exalted while ruling the second and ninth. All three form Malavya yoga. For a Pisces lagna the seventh is Virgo, Venus's debilitation sign, and Venus rules the third and eighth; here the reader looks closely at cancellation and at Jupiter, the lagna lord.

What it does not mean

A seventh-house Venus does not say when someone will marry, whether they will, or how many relationships they will have. The karako bhava nashaya maxim is a scholarly debate about emphasis, not a warning, and it must never be used to unsettle anyone. The maraka label belongs to longevity calculations and says nothing about the partner. The seventh lord, the navamsha and the dasha weigh as much as Venus does.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which sign is the seventh house, and is Venus exalted, in its own sign, debilitated or neutral there?
  2. 02Is Venus combust or retrograde, and is it strong enough for the karako bhava nashaya concern to apply?
  3. 03Where is the seventh lord, and what is its condition?
  4. 04Do Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu join or aspect Venus, and does Jupiter support it?
  5. 05How do Venus and the seventh house look in the navamsha, and which dasha is running?

In practice

A careful reader treats the seventh-house Venus as a strong statement of what partnership means to the person, then decides how much the karako bhava nashaya concern applies by checking dignity, combustion, aspects and the navamsha. The seventh lord and the dasha complete the picture. Lipta readings cite those placements and the relevant dates, so each statement can be checked against the chart that produced it.
