Venus in the 4th House
The fourth house lies at the base of the chart. It governs the home and its atmosphere, the mother, land, vehicles, schooling, and sukha, the inner contentment that lets a person feel at ease. Venus signifies comfort, beauty, pleasure and harmony, and among its traditional significations are conveyances and the furnishings of a pleasant life. The fourth is also where Venus receives dig bala, full directional strength, an honour it shares only with the Moon. Classical astrologers therefore treat a fourth-house Venus as a planet working in favourable territory.

What it traditionally signifies
The texts describe a fourth-house Venus as giving a comfortable, well-kept home, pleasant vehicles, affection from the mother, a circle of friends, and a disposition that is content more often than not. Phaladeepika speaks of happiness, fame and the comforts of the household. Modern readers talk about a person who invests in their surroundings: a beautiful room, a garden, music in the house, a table people want to sit at. Emotional security comes from a harmonious domestic life, and the person often becomes the one who makes others feel at home.
The less helpful side is attachment to comfort. When home is the place of peace, disruption there can feel heavier than it would to others; the wish for a lovely setting can become a long pursuit of the perfect house; and the appetite for ease can make it hard to leave a pleasant situation that has stopped serving the person. A few authors also apply the karako bhava nashaya maxim here, since Venus signifies vehicles and comforts, though most give the dig bala more weight.
From the fourth Venus aspects the tenth, so a gentle, cultivated manner extends into work and public standing. The sign shapes much of the detail. For an Aquarius lagna the fourth is Taurus, Venus's own sign, and Venus is the yogakaraka ruling the fourth and ninth, so it stands in a kendra as lord of a kendra and a trikona at once. For a Cancer lagna the fourth is Libra, its own sign, with Venus ruling the fourth and eleventh. For a Sagittarius lagna the fourth is Pisces, where Venus is exalted, though it rules the sixth and eleventh. All three form Malavya yoga. For a Gemini lagna the fourth is Virgo, the debilitation sign, with Venus ruling the fifth and twelfth, and the directional strength and the weak dignity have to be weighed together.
What it does not mean
A fourth-house Venus does not promise property, vehicles, a particular home or anything about the mother's wellbeing. Dig bala and Malavya yoga describe the planet's capacity, not events. The fourth lord, the Moon as the significator of the mother and mind, Mars for land, and the dasha all take part in those questions, and none can be judged from Venus alone.
Questions it raises
- 01Which sign is the fourth house, and is Venus exalted, in its own sign, debilitated or neutral there?
- 02Which houses does Venus rule for this lagna, and is it a yogakaraka?
- 03Is Venus combust or retrograde, and how close is it to the Sun?
- 04Where are the fourth lord and the Moon, and does Saturn or Mars aspect the fourth?
- 05Which dasha is running, and what sits in the tenth house that Venus aspects?
In practice
A careful reader takes the fourth-house Venus as a strong, home-loving Venus, then examines lordship, combustion, the fourth lord and the Moon before speaking about domestic life, and the tenth house before speaking about work. The dasha shows when home and comfort come to the fore. Lipta readings cite the sign, aspects and dasha dates behind each line, so the steps can be traced.
