Sun in the 7th House

The seventh house is the sign opposite the lagna, the one setting in the west at birth, so a seventh-house Sun belongs, roughly, to a birth around sunset. The seventh governs marriage and partnership of every kind: the spouse, business partners, contracts and the public one deals with face to face. It is a kendra, and like the second it carries the maraka label, which belongs to a technical longevity calculation and says nothing about married life. The Sun is the planet of the individual will, so placing it in the house of the other is an old and interesting tension.

What it traditionally signifies

Tradition reads a seventh-house Sun as a self that meets itself through others. Partners are often described as strong-willed, proud, prominent or associated with authority, and the person may be drawn to people who are confident and visible. Partnerships with those in power, in public life or in established institutions are a common theme. At its best the placement gives dignity and loyalty in relationships, a capacity to deal with the public, and a sense of honour in agreements.

The harder face is a contest of wills. Phaladeepika and other texts carry some severe lines about this placement, and modern readers translate them into a question of ego within partnership: who leads, who yields, whose dignity is protected. Readers describe relationships in which pride gets in the way of tenderness, or in which the person expects a partner to reflect their own standing. From the seventh the Sun aspects the lagna, so the experience of partnership feeds back into the sense of self. Venus, the karaka of marriage, often travels close to the Sun, and when it is combust in the seventh, readers note that its warmth can be overshadowed by the Sun's glare.

For a Libra lagna the seventh is Aries, where the Sun is exalted and rules the eleventh, read as partners who bring gains and standing. For an Aquarius lagna the seventh is Leo, so the seventh lord sits in its own house, a strong and dignified partnership theme. For an Aries lagna the seventh is Libra, where the Sun is debilitated and rules the fifth, so pride and affection have to learn to negotiate.

What it does not mean

A seventh-house Sun does not decide whether, when or how someone marries, and it is not a forecast of separation or of a difficult spouse. It is not a manglik-style test of any kind, and a single placement is never a verdict on marriage. The maraka label is a longevity category and has nothing to do with the partner. Relationship questions are read from the seventh lord, Venus, Jupiter, the navamsha and the dasha together.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which sign is the seventh house for this lagna, and what is the Sun's dignity there?
  2. 02Where is the seventh lord, and is it strong?
  3. 03Is Venus close to the Sun and combust, and how is it placed in the navamsha?
  4. 04Does Jupiter aspect the seventh house or the Sun?
  5. 05Which dasha is running, and does it activate the seventh house?

In practice

A careful reader treats a seventh-house Sun as information about the style of partnership, especially about pride and leadership within it, and then looks at the seventh lord, Venus and the navamsha before saying anything further. The lagna, which the Sun aspects, shows how the person carries what they learn from partners. Lipta readings cite those placements and dates, so each sentence can be checked against the chart.
