Rahu in the 8th House
Few houses attract as much anxious searching as the eighth, and few are as poorly served by it. The eighth is a dusthana, a house of difficulty in the classical scheme, and it governs longevity as a technical category, sudden change, transformation, inheritance and other people's resources, secrets, research and occult knowledge. In whole-sign houses it is the sign seven steps on from the lagna. Rahu is the north lunar node, a shadow point read as hunger and the pull towards the unknown, and with Rahu in the eighth, Ketu sits in the second house.

What it traditionally signifies
The eighth is the house of what lies beneath, and Rahu's appetite here is traditionally read as a drive to uncover it. Common readings describe a talent for research, investigation, psychology, astrology and other hidden sciences, and for handling crises others avoid. Modern astrologers often add fields such as insurance, taxation, forensic work, surgery and allied medicine, and any work that deals with shared resources or with what is kept out of view. Many people with this placement are described as resilient: able to rebuild after change and unafraid of difficult subjects.
The classical texts are more cautious about the eighth than about most houses, and some describe sudden ups and downs, unexpected gains or losses through others, or anxiety about the unknown. A careful reader holds these as the signification of the house rather than as events: the eighth lord, the lagna lord, Saturn as the natural significator of longevity, and the dasha decide how any of it applies, and none of it is a statement about lifespan or health.
Ketu in the second completes the axis. It is read as a certain detachment from family patterns, accumulated wealth or habitual speech, perhaps an indifference to the ordinary rules of saving and spending; the developing interest moves towards what is shared, deep and transformative. In the common usage that gives the nodes the 5th, 7th and 9th aspects, Rahu here aspects the twelfth, second and fourth houses; opinions on node aspects differ.
What it does not mean
Rahu in the eighth does not predict accidents, illness, a short life, scandal or loss, and it should never be used to frighten anyone. Longevity in the classical texts is a specialised technical calculation that no single placement settles, and modern practice treats it with great reserve. Ketu in the second is not a forecast about family or money. These are themes of the houses involved, and they only mean something when read with their lords and the dasha.
Questions it raises
- 01Which sign is the eighth house, and how is its lord placed?
- 02Is the lagna lord strong, since the first house balances the eighth?
- 03What is the condition of Rahu's dispositor?
- 04How are the second house and its lord placed, given Ketu there?
- 05Is a Rahu, Ketu or eighth-lord period running?
In practice
A careful reader reads the eighth-house Rahu through the eighth lord and Rahu's sign lord, checks the strength of the lagna lord, and reads Ketu in the second with the second lord. The dasha shows when the axis is in focus. Nothing about lifespan or health is inferred from this placement. Lipta readings cite these placements and their dates, so the basis of each statement is in view.
