Rahu in the 6th House
The sixth house is unusual in carrying two labels at once. It is a dusthana, one of the three difficult houses, because it governs illness, debt, conflict and opponents; and it is an upachaya, a house where malefic planets are thought to grow stronger with effort and time. It also governs daily work, service, routine and the ability to overcome obstacles. In whole-sign houses it is the sign five steps after the lagna. Rahu, the north lunar node, is a calculated point read as appetite and daring, and Ketu is always six houses away: here, in the twelfth.

What it traditionally signifies
Classical authors, Phaladeepika among them, count the sixth as one of the houses where Rahu gives good results, and the common reading is of a person who meets competition, obstacles and opposition with unusual tenacity and often comes out ahead. Rahu here is described as the ability to outmanoeuvre rivals, handle pressure, work in demanding or unconventional settings, and succeed in fields involving service, law, medicine and healing, technology, analysis, or work with foreign organisations. Malefics in the sixth are said to defeat the enemies they signify, and the node is the classic example.
The other face is restlessness about routine, a tendency to take on more conflict than necessary, or anxiety that attaches itself to small problems. The sixth is also linked with health practices, and some texts mention unusual or hard-to-name complaints; a careful reader treats that only as a theme of the house, never as a statement about anyone's health, and reads the lagna, the lagna lord and the sixth lord before saying anything.
With Ketu in the twelfth, the axis runs between engaged daily effort and retreat, rest, expense and release. The twelfth-house Ketu is often read as an inborn ease with solitude, spirituality or life abroad, sometimes even a liking for detachment; the developing interest is in practical engagement and service. In the common usage that gives the nodes the 5th, 7th and 9th aspects, Rahu here aspects the tenth, twelfth and second houses; opinions on node aspects differ.
What it does not mean
Rahu in the sixth is not a prediction of illness, debt, legal trouble or enemies, nor of victory over them. The tradition's favourable view describes a capacity, not an outcome. Ketu in the twelfth does not foretell loss, hospital stays or foreign residence. These are significations of the houses involved, and they say something about a life only when read with the house lords, the lagna and the dasha.
Questions it raises
- 01Which sign is the sixth house, and how is its lord placed?
- 02Is the lagna lord strong enough to make use of a strong sixth?
- 03What is the condition of Rahu's dispositor?
- 04How are the twelfth house and its lord placed, given Ketu there?
- 05Is a Rahu, Ketu or sixth-lord period running?
In practice
A careful reader treats a sixth-house Rahu as a constructive placement for effort and competition, then checks it against the sixth lord, the lagna lord and Rahu's sign lord. The twelfth-house Ketu is read with the twelfth lord, and the dasha shows when the axis is active. Health is never inferred from this placement alone. Lipta readings cite these placements and the dates of the relevant periods, so the reasoning is open to inspection.
