Mars in the 6th House
The sixth house, counted here as the whole sign five steps on from the lagna and therefore dependent on the birth time, is the house of obstacles and the effort that meets them. Tradition assigns it rivals and opponents, disputes, debts, illness and its management, daily work, service and routine. It belongs to two categories at once: it is a dusthana, one of the difficult houses, and an upachaya, a house of growth through effort. Mars is one of its natural karakas, and as the planet of courage and competition it is, in the classical view, exactly the planet one wants facing the sixth house's challenges.

What it traditionally signifies
Few placements of Mars are praised as consistently as this one. Parashara, Phaladeepika and Jataka Parijata all describe a sixth-house Mars as victory over enemies, the ability to defeat competition, and strength in disputes. The logic is that a natural malefic in a house of difficulty fights the difficulty rather than the person, and in an upachaya its results grow with time. Commentators connect it with competitive fields, the armed services and police, sport, surgery, law, engineering and any work that involves solving problems under pressure, as well as with a robust capacity for hard, regular work.
The costs are real but modest by comparison. Energy that is always prepared to fight can find opponents where there are none; work can become a battleground; and the urge to handle everything personally can make rest difficult. Because the sixth also concerns health, some texts link a strong Mars here with heat in the body or an active, sometimes impatient approach to one's own wellbeing; these are descriptive associations and not forecasts.
From the sixth, Mars aspects the ninth, the twelfth and the first. The aspect on the lagna returns its fighting energy to the person; the twelfth gets activity in matters of expense and retreat; the ninth may make for robust debate with teachers or beliefs. For a Scorpio lagna Mars is the lagna lord in its own Aries here; for Gemini lagna it is in its own Scorpio, ruling the sixth and eleventh; for Leo lagna the yogakaraka is exalted in the sixth, a mixed signal the reader weighs; for Aquarius lagna it is debilitated.
What it does not mean
Mars in the sixth house does not predict illness, litigation, debt or enemies, and it is not a promise that every contest will be won. The tradition's praise describes the capacity to meet difficulty, not the absence of it. Nor does this placement say anything about marriage. Health, in particular, is never read from one planet in one house; it needs the lagna, its lord, the sixth and eighth lords and many other factors, and even then astrology is not a medical judgement.
Questions it raises
- 01Which sign is the sixth house, and is Mars dignified, debilitated or neutral there?
- 02How is the lagna lord placed, since the aspect from the sixth falls on the lagna?
- 03Where is the sixth lord, and is there any exchange with Mars?
- 04Do Saturn or Rahu add pressure, or does Jupiter moderate the placement?
- 05Which dasha is running, and does it bring Mars or the sixth lord forward?
In practice
Most readers start from the presumption that a sixth-house Mars is a resource, then check the sign, the sixth lord and the lagna lord to see how much of that resource is available and where it is spent. Lordship matters: Mars ruling good houses and sitting here is read differently from Mars ruling difficult ones. Lipta readings cite the placements and dates behind each sentence, so the reasoning can be checked.
