Moon in Pisces

The Moon in Vedic astrology is the mind that feels, the store of memory, the signifier of the mother and of the home one returns to. Indian astrologers read the Moon sign first, and the Moon's nakshatra decides where the Vimshottari dasha begins. A Pisces Moon places this mind in a dual water sign ruled by Jupiter, the last sign of the zodiac, and tradition reads it as a mind with very thin walls: it absorbs the moods around it, imagines readily, and finds comfort in what cannot be measured.

What it traditionally signifies

The classical descriptions of the Pisces Moon speak of compassion, imagination, devotion and a gentle, accommodating manner. The mind is porous to other people's feelings and often knows what someone needs before it can say why. There is a liking for music, water, quiet places and stories, a readiness to forgive, and a faith that things will work out which can be either wisdom or wishfulness depending on the rest of the chart. Jupiter as sign lord gives the Moon a protective, generous quality, and the dual modality lets the person adapt to almost any company.

The shadow is a loss of edges. A Pisces Moon can drift, avoid decisions, take on other people's distress as its own, and escape into daydream, sleep or sentiment when the present becomes uncomfortable. Boundaries are the recurring lesson: knowing which feelings belong to oneself and which were picked up from the room. The mother is often read as kind, spiritual, self-sacrificing or somewhat elusive, with the fourth house and its lord giving the particulars. When Jupiter is strong the receptiveness becomes real insight; when it is weak the same openness leaves the person easily swayed.

The nakshatras colour Pisces in three ways. The fourth pada of Purva Bhadrapada, from 0° to 3°20' under Jupiter, opens the sign with intensity and a seriousness about transformation that is unusual for the rest of it. Uttara Bhadrapada, from 3°20' to 16°40' under Saturn, is the deepest and most disciplined portion, patient, reclusive and capable of long endurance. Revati, from 16°40' to the end of the sign under Mercury, is the gentlest and most protective, concerned with safe passage, nourishment and the care of others.

What it does not mean

A Pisces Moon is not weakness, and it is not a prediction of confusion, addiction or being taken advantage of, however often such claims are made online. It describes a mind that takes the world in before sorting it, which is a style of feeling rather than a deficiency. The placement says nothing about marriage, career, money or dates. Whether the receptiveness shows as compassion or as drift depends on Jupiter's condition, the house the Moon occupies, and the planets that aspect it; a Pisces Moon with Saturn or Mars nearby can be surprisingly firm.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Is the Moon in the last pada of Purva Bhadrapada, in Uttara Bhadrapada or in Revati, and which pada?
  2. 02Where does Jupiter, the sign lord, sit, and is it strong, retrograde or combust?
  3. 03Which house from the lagna holds the Moon, and does that house give the imagination a shape or leave it unbounded?
  4. 04Is Saturn transiting Aquarius, Pisces or Aries now, which would mean sade sati for a Pisces Moon?
  5. 05Which mahadasha is running, and is its lord a friend of the Moon?

In practice

In practice the Pisces Moon is read with Jupiter in view first, since the sign lord decides whether the openness has anything to hold it, and then with the house and the running dasha, which say where the feeling is pointed and whether this is a period that asks for boundaries. Envisstack readings cite the placements and dates behind each sentence, so the basis of any statement can be checked against the chart.
