Moon in the 7th House
Opposite the rising sign sits the seventh house, setting in the west as the lagna rises in the east. It is the house of the other: the spouse, business partners, contracts, open rivals and the public met face to face. It is also a kendra, an angle of the chart, so a planet here has room to act. The Moon brings the mind that feels and the need to be met with feeling. In this placement that need faces outwards, and the tradition reads the person as someone who comes alive in relationship and takes in the moods of the people across the table.

What it traditionally signifies
The classical manuals describe a seventh-house Moon as giving an agreeable manner, an attraction to a partner who is gentle, good-looking or emotionally expressive, and a talent for dealing with people, which is why trade and public-facing work are often mentioned. The modern reading puts it in terms of responsiveness: such a person reads others quickly, is good company, and tends to find their own feelings clarified through conversation with someone they trust. Partnership is felt as a source of nourishment, much as the fourth house is felt as home.
The less easy side is dependence on that mirror. If mood follows the partner's mood, the person can lose track of what they themselves want, and changes in close relationships are felt strongly. Some texts mention a changeable approach to partnership, which a careful reader takes as a description of how much the relationship matters to the mind, not of how many relationships there are. The seventh is also a maraka house, a technical label used in longevity work, which says nothing about the partner or the marriage and should not be confused with either.
From the seventh the Moon aspects the lagna, so whatever it absorbs from others flows back into the person's own temperament and bearing. The sign settles much of the tone. For a Scorpio lagna the seventh is Taurus, where the Moon is exalted, and it rules the ninth, a combination read as partnership tied to fortune and shared values. For a Capricorn lagna the seventh is Cancer, the Moon's own sign, so the seventh lord stands in its own house, strengthening the house's themes. For a Taurus lagna the seventh is Scorpio, the debilitation sign, with the Moon ruling the third; here a reader expects intensity in partnership and checks carefully for support from Jupiter or Venus.
What it does not mean
A seventh-house Moon does not say when or whether a person will marry, describe the partner's appearance as a fact, or decide how any relationship will go. It is not a verdict on fidelity or stability. Venus, the natural significator of marriage, the seventh lord and the navamsha carry those questions alongside this placement, and the dasha shows only which years bring the theme forward.
Questions it raises
- 01Which sign is the seventh house, and is the Moon exalted, in its own sign, debilitated or neutral there?
- 02Is the Moon waxing or waning, and is it close to or opposite the Sun?
- 03Where are Venus and the seventh lord, and what condition are they in?
- 04Does Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Jupiter aspect the Moon or the seventh house?
- 05Which dasha is running, and how does the seventh house look in the navamsha?
In practice
A reader treats the seventh-house Moon as a statement about how a person relates, then weighs Venus, the seventh lord, the navamsha and the Moon's phase before saying anything about partnership itself. Because the Moon aspects the lagna, the lagna lord is checked as well. Lipta readings cite those placements and the relevant dasha dates, so each sentence can be traced to its source in the chart.
