Mars in the 7th House

The seventh house is the sign directly opposite the lagna, setting in the west at birth; in this engine's whole-sign method it is the sign six steps on from the rising sign, so it shares the birth time's uncertainty. It governs marriage and committed partnership, the spouse, business partners, contracts, open rivals, and the public one meets face to face. It is a kendra and also a maraka house in the technical longevity sense. Mars is the planet of energy, courage, desire and contest. Of all its house placements, this is the one people ask about most, usually because of the popular Mars-and-marriage rule, so it deserves a calm and complete explanation.

What it traditionally signifies

Classical texts describe a seventh-house Mars as energy and heat brought into partnership. The partner may be read as active, independent, strong-willed or physically energetic; the relationship as passionate, frank and sometimes argumentative. Phaladeepika and later writers mention disagreements within marriage or a need for each partner to have room of their own, and in business a competitive, assertive way of dealing with associates and the public. The constructive face is real too: loyalty, protectiveness, the courage to address problems openly, and partnerships that get things done.

This house is the centre of the popular check usually called kuja dosha or mangal dosha. It is worth knowing what that rule is and is not. It is a screening convention, applied differently by different schools, that notes Mars in certain houses from the lagna, the Moon or Venus. The same tradition lists many conditions that neutralise it, including Mars in its own or exaltation sign, Jupiter's aspect, and similar placements in both charts, and many astrologers regard it as one minor consideration among dozens.

From the seventh Mars aspects the tenth, the first and the second, carrying the partnership's energy into career, the self and family resources. The sign matters greatly: for Libra and Taurus lagnas Mars is in its own sign and rules the seventh; for a Cancer lagna the yogakaraka Mars is exalted in the seventh and forms Ruchaka yoga; for a Capricorn lagna it is debilitated, and neecha bhanga needs checking.

What it does not mean

Mars in the seventh house is not a verdict on marriage. It does not mean a marriage will fail, be delayed or be unhappy, and it is not a reason for anxiety, rituals or ruling out a match. A single placement cannot answer questions about a relationship; the seventh lord, Venus, Jupiter, the navamsha and the dashas all speak, and the people involved speak loudest. The maraka label is a longevity category and says nothing about the partner.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which sign holds the seventh house, and is Mars in its own sign, exalted, debilitated or neutral there?
  2. 02Where are the seventh lord and Venus, and are they strong and free of affliction?
  3. 03Does Jupiter aspect the seventh house or Mars?
  4. 04How does the navamsha describe Mars and the seventh house?
  5. 05Which dasha is running, and does it activate the seventh house at all?

In practice

A careful reader treats a seventh-house Mars as a description of energy in partnership and then looks at everything else that describes partnership: the seventh lord, Venus, Jupiter, the navamsha and the running dasha. Exceptions to the popular checklist are checked plainly, and no conclusion about a marriage is drawn from Mars alone. Lipta readings cite the sign, aspects, lordships and dates behind each statement, so you can see exactly what is and is not being claimed.
