Jupiter in Capricorn

Capricorn is the sign of Jupiter's debilitation, with the deepest point at five degrees. Jupiter is the guru of the Vedic chart: wisdom, teaching, faith and counsel, the significator of children and growth, and traditionally the husband in a woman's chart. Because it spends about a year in each sign, a debilitated Jupiter belongs to a whole year of births and describes the planet's footing, not a person's fortune. The house it holds and the aspects it casts are what make the reading yours.

What it traditionally signifies

Capricorn is a movable earth sign owned by Saturn, which the friendship tables place as neutral to Jupiter. The texts explain the debility by temperament: the guru's expansive, trusting nature meets a sign built on limits, labour and caution, and finds less room to breathe. The reading is of wisdom earned through practice rather than received: faith tested by circumstance, counsel that is sober and practical, generosity measured against what can be afforded, and growth that arrives slowly, through work and endurance rather than through teachers or fortune.

The debility is read with care rather than alarm. Tradition lists conditions said to soften or cancel it, called neecha bhanga: Saturn, the sign lord, in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon; the Moon, which rules Jupiter's exaltation sign, in a kendra; Saturn in its own sign or exalted; Jupiter itself in a kendra; or an exchange of signs between Jupiter and Saturn. None of these removes the placement's character; they describe a Jupiter that works despite the terrain. The harder face is a faith that turns pessimistic, counsel that becomes dry, and a reluctance to trust what cannot be measured.

From Capricorn, Jupiter aspects Taurus with its fifth glance, Cancer, its exaltation sign, with its seventh, and Virgo with its ninth, so those houses share in it. The nakshatra adds texture: the later padas of Uttara Ashadha, ruled by the Sun, bring principle and perseverance; Shravana, ruled by the Moon, favours listening, learning and tradition; the first half of Dhanishta, ruled by Mars, gives drive and a liking for achievement.

What it does not mean

A debilitated Jupiter is not a verdict on children, wealth, marriage or the protection a chart is said to give, and it does not describe a weak person. Debility is one planet's comfort in one sign; the lagna, the Moon, the dasha sequence and the other planets keep their own conditions. The same Jupiter may sit in a kendra, be strong in the navamsha, enjoy one of the cancellations above, or rule houses whose themes the dasha is bringing forward.

Questions it raises

  1. 01Which house from the lagna holds Capricorn, and which houses hold Taurus, Cancer and Virgo?
  2. 02Where are Saturn and the Moon placed, and does either stand in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon?
  3. 03Is Jupiter near five degrees, retrograde, combust, or stronger in the navamsha?
  4. 04Is it in Uttara Ashadha, Shravana or Dhanishta, and in which pada?
  5. 05Which mahadasha is running, and where is Jupiter transiting from your natal Moon?

In practice

In practice Jupiter in Capricorn is read with Saturn's condition, the house it occupies and whether any cancellation applies, before anything is said about what the debility costs or teaches; the running dasha and Jupiter's transit from the Moon decide which year brings it forward. Envisstack readings cite those placements and dates, so you can see what each sentence rests on.
